Devika & Danny is the latest Telugu web series now streaming on Jio Hotstar. Featuring Ritu Varma, Surya Vashistta, Shiva Kandukuri, and Subbaraju in key roles, the series is directed by B. Kishore of Sreekaram fame and marks Ritu Varma’s Telugu OTT debut. Let’s see how this mildly emotional drama with a breezy tone fares.

Story:

Devika (Ritu Varma) is a gentle and grounded music teacher at a local school. She gets engaged to Jaggu (Subbaraju), a possessive man whose controlling behaviour quietly concerns those around her. When a priest predicts that Devika might fall for someone else before her marriage, her family dismisses it. But soon, a mysterious man named Danny (Surya Vashistta) enters her life, and things begin to shift in unexpected ways. Who is Danny? Why has he appeared? What role does Durga play in all this? And what happens to Devika’s engagement? These questions form the core of the story.

Plus Points:

At a time when most web content leans on bold language and adult themes, Devika & Danny stands out as a clean and family-friendly show. It avoids sensationalism and delivers a straightforward narrative with sincerity.

Ritu Varma makes a graceful debut in the Telugu OTT space, delivering a subtle and composed performance. She fits the role of Devika well and brings natural charm to her character.

Surya Vashistta gets plenty of screen time as Danny and utilises it effectively. He balances light moments with emotion and shares a pleasing chemistry with Ritu, adding warmth to their scenes.

Subbaraju, though limited in screen time, offers decent comic relief with his serious expression-driven humour. The supporting cast does a fine job, and the narrative flows without major lags or forced deviations.

Minus Points:

While the pacing is smooth, the series lacks narrative surprises. Once the central twist is revealed midway, the story turns predictable. Viewers hoping for layered storytelling or strong emotional hooks may find it lacking.

Certain logic gaps stand out, especially Devika not questioning Danny’s repeated appearances in the same outfit before discovering who he actually is. It feels a bit unnatural and could have been addressed more thoughtfully.

Actors like Harsha Chemudu, Mounika, and Sonia Singh are underutilised. Harsha’s comedic portions feel like fillers and fail to create impact. Shiva Kandukuri as Subbu has minimal scope and ends up largely forgettable. Kovai Sarala makes a welcome return, but her emotional arc lacks the depth needed to leave a lasting impression.

Technical Aspects:

Director B. Kishore maintains a consistent tone and ensures the narrative doesn’t lose track. However, the absence of stronger emotional moments or engaging twists limits the show’s overall impact. This could have risen above its simplicity with better-written arcs or surprise elements.

On the technical front, the show is neatly done. Backed by Chaganti Sudhakar under the Joy Films banner, the production values feel rich and cinematic despite it being a web series. Venkat C Dillip’s cinematography is visually appealing, Jay Krish’s background score complements the scenes well, and the CG work is tidy. Editing by Karthikeyan Rohini is fine, though a few portions could have been trimmed for better sharpness.

Verdict:

On the whole, Devika & Danny is a simple, clean, and passable watch for those in the mood for something light. It doesn’t aim for grandeur or emotional intensity, but it maintains a pleasant tone throughout. Ritu Varma and Surya Vashistta deliver likeable performances that keep the show afloat. Though it misses out on gripping twists and deeper emotional exploration, the shorter runtime and clean presentation make it suitable for a relaxed family watch over the weekend.
